âWhat the hell!â Jeannette exploded.
Daniel gave her a quick glance. He almost smiled. She had just managed to scare the hell out of a ghost. Henriette jumped back as if sheâd been touched by a branding iron.
âIâm sorry, Iâm so sorry... I just... Iâm so stunned, and not even because of what youâve told us but by the fact that we didnât know!â Jeannette apologized quickly.
Henriette still seemed a bit confused but she nodded solemnly and said, âDe rien. Itâs nothing. Itâs all right.â
âThank you, thank you, and again, Iâm so sorry,â Jeannette said.
âYouâre sure about what you heard?â Daniel asked Henriette.
âMais oui! I was right there, I heard clearly,â Henriette said. âBut...perhaps she is not really his maman, perhaps it was a word of affection for an older woman.â
âWeâll find out,â Daniel told her.
Jeannette moved closer, as if sheâd take Henrietteâs hand if it were possible. âAnd we do mean thank you, and if you willââ
âOh, I will continue to watch! It is my extreme pleasure to help you in any way. I longed, always, to be a voice of the people. I was in life perhaps a bit ahead of my time. But now here with you, if I can help save the life of one woman, it will be my greatest joy.â
âYou are amazing,â Daniel told her. âAnd we are grateful to have you on our team.â He turned to Jeannette and said, âI think his show has run long tonightâbut if heâs already seeing his people with backstage passes, weâd best get over there.â
âGo. I will be here each nightâif you are not able to make it, I will wait for the next night,â Henriette told them.
They repeated their thanks and started back out to the sidewalk and then down to the theater.
âHow is this possible? How could he be her son? She is a Matisseâknown and respected in this region. He said nothing to usâwhile giving us information that heâd known the girls and allâabout having any relationship with the wineries whatsoever. Jules Bastien. Why an assumed name? And worse than that, how did our tech departments not find the connectionâand even worse, why didnât Gervais tell us?â Jeannette asked, shaking her head.
âMaybe Gervais didnât know,â Daniel suggested.
âHow could he not know? Heâs worked in Paris and the environs for years. He knew all our suspects in the vineyards, at least casually. He has been privy to the murders from the beginning. Oh! When we were speaking to Madame Matisse at her bed-and-breakfast, her son was giving the tour for her. How did we not see any of this?â
âAll right, as Henriette suggested, maybe he was just calling her Maman with affection for a rich supporter. And Paris and its environs are the largest metropolitan area in Europeâover eleven million people and that doesnât include Reims. So that adds in another couple of hundred thousand people. Gervais LaBlancâs expertise is Paris, whereâas in most major citiesâhe has enough crime to deal with. Now, I do
